Gobal Brands Expand

Local retailers feel fashion pain as global brands expand After 20 years working in Australian fashion, designer Fiona Wood is launching her own label, called Wonderwood. Putting together her first collection has meant doing everything herself — from design, to patternmaking, to developing a catalogue. But starting small and focusing on quality has always been part of Ms Wood's plan. "I really wanted to focus on well-made garments that are made in Australia, and also support our local industry," she said. It is the very opposite of the global fast fashion chains that are sending Australian operators to the wall. Since December, half a dozen well-known brands have collapsed: the women's retailers Marcs and David Lawrence; the children's label Pumpkin Patch; cut-price shoe store Payless Shoes; suit-maker Herringbone; and its stablemate Rhodes and Beckett. It all adds up to almost 4,000 jobs on the line so far. Former chief executive of David Jones, now globa...

First-Ever Fashion

Fashion aficionados bring to Delhi the first-ever 'Alchemy' of their creativity Here's what happened when five of the country's leading experts in fashion, design and art created a one-of-a-kind experience in the Capital. It was one of those rare events that had the Capital excited with anticipation. Five aficionados in the fields of fashion, fragrance and decor -Sunil Sethi, President FDC, Sussanne Khan, interior designer, Ashish N Soni, fashion designer, Vinod Nair, fashion and luxury writer, and Kalyani Chawla, entrepreneur -came together to present the first-ever 'Alchemy' of their creativity for whiskey brand, Chivas. The terrace of The Leela Palace, Chanakyapuri was converted into a lavish display, and true to the buzz that the evening had created, their presentations were a delight to the five senses. The curated space began with a large bar room called 'The Matter of Taste' envisioned by Sethi, with the minimal aesthetic of an experien...

The casual outfit : You might not make it out of the house for Valentine’s Day. Leg MakeUp

Image
The next hot trend is applying a full face of makeup to your legs It’s a world where you do ‘fun’ ‘out-there’ things to show off your skills, like painting your face with leftover food or creating looks designed to look like different crisp packets. The next hot way to display your makeup applying talents? Painting a perfectly made-up face onto your thighs. Yeah, we don’t quite get it either. But it looks pretty cool, and it’s a nice way to practice makeup looks without putting your face through even more product-overload stress. Makeup artist types have been doing this for a while, but the thigh makeup fun has now officially been declared as the cool new thing all the youths are doing. So that’s why we’re telling you about it. There’s no point to the technique other than taking a pic and showing it off on Instagram, to be clear. People aren’t wearing their made-up thighs out and about as a fresh new beauty statement. ...

Fashion Statement

Image
Political Fashion Statements at the Men’s Wear Shows Of course, reality intruded. Fabulousness is no barricade against politics. Reacting to President Trump’s executive order banning the entry of citizens from seven Muslim-majority nations and refugees from any country, designers who are showing their work during the four days of men’s fashion in New York expressed dissent in gestures that, while mainly small and symbolic, added gravitas to the usual street-style antics and overall frivolity. Sooty-faced models in Robert James’s show at the New York Men’s Day event on Monday carried placards block-printed with pointed messages: “Made in a Sanctuary City” and “Bridges Not Walls.” At a Private Policy presentation that afternoon, members of a multiracial cast clad in quilted bomber jackets and hot pants had words like “terrorist” stenciled on foreheads or cheeks. Taking a bow at the end of a show on Tuesday, in which models’ faces were obscured behind neoprene ski ...

Balenciaga Show

V&A hoping for another fashion blockbuster with Balenciaga show To Christian Dior, he was “the master of us all”. Oscar de la Renta believed he was the only fashion designer “who never did anything in bad taste”, and his protege, Hubert de Givenchy, called him “my religion”. While Cristóbal Balenciaga is revered throughout fashion history, his name has been overshadowed on the world stage by the blockbuster names of Dior and Chanel. But Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion – which opens at the V&A on 27 May – aims to change that, channelling the fashion week buzz around Balenciaga’s current avant-garde designer, Demna Gvasalia, in order to make 2017, the house’s centenary year, a fashion moment. Unveiling details of the exhibition on Wednesday, the curator Cassie Davies-Strodder said it would focus on Balenciaga’s “uncompromising creativity”, framing the designer, who died in 1972, as the revolutionary godfather of the avant-garde clothes currently making catwalk headlin...
