Look Out For fashion

Image
Look out for African fashion   EARLIER this week my comments about the recent Jamaica Observer report on Caribbean FashionWeek showcase were questioned, with civility and good manners — a rare commodity these days. The response came from one who spoke with respect, even as I gave my views. The person who was involved in the presentation communicated with me with a mild and gentle e-mail, questioning how and why? It is not often somebody disagrees with you and does so in a calm and civilised way. Therefore, I extend thanks and best wishes to the particular gentleman who knew what the word “civilised” means. We had a difference of opinion, as I declared that I was not impressed by the show — a conclusion I arrived at all by myself. Message learned: Respeck...even when somebody is bound to ask why you “fass inna people business”. Some expletives could have been included in the correspondence, but they weren't. There are many other people who would have gladly turned our diffe...

Smells To Millennial

Image
From food smells to millennial pink: this week’s fashion trends Going up Food smells Key to Christopher Shannon’s Verdúu perfume, along with sulphur and copper. A heady cocktail. Self-help A key theme of Blouse, the new unisex shirting label launched by Geoffrey J Finch, formerly of Topshop and Antipodium. Our favourite is the lace Shickle shirt. Criminal Minds Olivier Rousteing’s choice of chill TV. Expect FBI profilers dressed in Balmain cocktail wear any time now.   Stage-leisure As seen on stage at Manchester’s adaptation of Persuasion. Neutrals and blacks and joggers, very Céline. Exhibition Road The V&A’s extension is open. Time to marvel at the ceramic tiled courtyard. ‘Mangas’ Spanish for ‘sleeves’. Apparently heard shouted by sleeve-obsessive Cristóbal Balenciaga. Going down Polly Pocket bags We’re all for 90s nostalgia, but this is one throwback best left in the past. Millennial pink We’re calling it – it’s gone mass, and primary colours are the future. Lie-in...

Fashion Graduates

Image
The Future of Graduate Fashion Week      Graduate Fashion Week already connects thousands of students with industry recruiters, but is only just beginning to recognise its digital and global potential. LONDON, United Kingdom — Over the last four days, 1,500 graduate collections have been presented at Graduate Fashion Week in London. Bringing together 68 fashion schools from across the globe, the annual event is essentially an unusually exuberant recruitment fair. The venue, a multi-level warehouse space, has been transformed by graduate collections, filling every inch of three showrooms. Graduates stand eagerly by their portfolios, patiently hoping to catch the eye of industry insiders, press and the general public as they wind their way through the spaces. Founded in 1991, from the outset, Graduate Fashion Week’s (GFW) goal has been clear: “We got all the students from various universities around the UK, we got potential employers that came from Europe and Ameri...

Latest Makeup

The Latest Beauty Trend Is Not Buying More Makeup With tens of thousands of new offerings from beauty brands yearly, makeup lovers are saying “no thanks.” If you’ve browsed through the “Just Arrived” section of Sephora lately, you’d be forgiven for being overwhelmed. As of press time, there are 84 items in that section alone. In total, the store stocks 17,000 products, and it expects companies that sell in the store to have new offerings every three months in order to keep their spot. Ulta, one of Sephora’s main competitors, stocks “over 20,000 products” from “over 500 brands.”   And stores like Sephora and Ulta are just one part of the vast makeup industry — there are also indie brands, drugstore aisles, and prestige offerings like Chanel that don’t stock at Sephora or Ulta. Picking up a novel blush or foundation can be fun, but feeling lost in a deluge of new releases, without much of a guide about what’s worth your attention and what’s not, can be daunting. You can find you...
