Valentine MakeUp

Image
Behold Kylie Jenner’s new Valentine’s Day makeup collection It’s 15 sleeps until Valentine’s Day, and it’s been a while since Kylie Jenner bequeathed any new makeup to us. So get ready for some new lip kits, mattes and mini mattes (because those normal mattes are just too large), as she’s revealed her Valentine’s Day collection on Snapchat. Whether you’re hoping that hinting to your significant other will do the job or are buying a V-day present for yourself, the glittery packaging is something of beauty. First are the new matte lip shades: High Maintenance, Head Over Heels and Apricot, which are a subtle pink, gold-tinted burgundy and suitably-peachy shade. Then come the kits – which involve both a matte liquid lipstick and lip liner – also in Head Over Heels and a hot pink shade, Valentine. There’ll also be three mini makeup bundles, which each contain two lipsticks and two eye shadows. These in a little more detail: Sweetheart includes the classics ...

Dash Of Punk

Image
Dash of Punk Opens Men’s Fashion Week in New York Punk has always been good for fashion. Ever since the long-ago days of the Sex Pistols and SEX, the London boutique where Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood formalized a style to go with the music, punk has been a trusty ploy for designers looking to strike a subversive posture while also providing a fairly impressive soundtrack for anyone who gave a damn that the movement was about something more than a look. So there was something bracing, if not altogether surprising, about the latest iteration of New York Fashion Week: Men’s opening with a posse of unaffiliated designers who took punk as their inspiration. For the Krammer & Stoudt designer Michael Rubin, it was gutter punks, the tattooed transients sometimes called “crustys” and whose anarchic, live-rough ways were memorably chronicled by the photographer Mike Brodie in books like “Tones of Dirt and Bone,” and “A Period of Juvenile Prosperity.” Dissect the...

Fashion Conscience

Image
Fashion’s Conscience holds model calls As students made their way to the top floor of Hall of Languages on Friday afternoon, what is typically a hushed academic environment turned into something more fierce. The room was encapsulated with heart-thumping music, 4-inch heels and a catwalk that would make Naomi Campbell proud — just a typical day for a model call. Fashion’s Conscience held its annual auditions while on the lookout for fresh faces to walk in its annual spring fashion show. Students from every year showed up to put their best foot forward. But, just a tip, make sure it’s left foot over right foot. For a model, the opposite is considered a big no-no. Although the fashion show is not a professional gig, for many this is just the entry-level experience they need to further their modeling career — with the hopes of transcending them from Instagram to the runway. In fact, many alumni have managed to launch a modeling career post academia. Just this past fall, Syr...

Red Carpet Fashion

Image
Fashion Review: SAGs Red Carpet Is Sober and Spunky Actresses go with political statements and personalized looks : Against the backdrop of coast-to-coast protests of Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration that went into effect this weekend, stars took to the red carpet for the annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday. Many used their speeches during the show to air opinions about the ban of immigrants from 7 predominately Muslim countries. On the red carpet, the fashion was both sober and spunky. The biggest takeaway was that the women--and many of the men--dressed like individuals; even those who wore the same designer looked distinct, as it should be in this age of self-expression. One political sartorial statement came from Gwendoline Christie of Game of Thrones, who chose a black sequin jumpsuit by British designer and punk icon Vivienne Westwood, an environmental and human rights activist who has stood up to authority her entire career, including in 2015 dri...

Exclusive: Lingerie maker Victoria's Secret looks to uncover supply chain issues                            NEW YORK (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Lingerie giant Victoria's Secret, famed for its racy bras and thongs, has pledged to trace the sources of its wood-based fabrics, joining the ranks of fashion companies addressing human rights and deforestation, its parent company said. In a new policy statement, parent company L Brands said it aimed to eliminate sources of wood pulp, used to make rayon, viscose and modal, that contribute to rainforest destruction or violate the rights of local people. L Brands is the latest in a growing number of U.S. fashion companies to commit to investigate its supply chain for products from destructive regions and stop using those sources by the end of 2017, according to Rainforest Action Network (RAN). Ralph Lauren Corp, whose designs are popular on Hollywood's red carpets, a...

Fashion Faith

Image
Fashion keeps the faith From St Christopher to Elvis, designers have paid homage to all sorts of icons .  In a time of uncertainty, designers have turned to faith. You probably won’t find them on a church pew but the Spring/Summer 2017 collections have seized on theology for key visual motifs.  You can see it in passing at avant-streetwear merchants Hood by Air, where designer Shayne Oliver has put the slogan “NEVER TRUST A CHURCH GIRL” on spacey, light blue showerproof hoodies, T-shirts and even iPhone cases. It is evident also in the Virgin Marys and medals of Saint Christopher — the patron saint of travellers — emblazoned on the garments at Christopher Kane. “I grew up down the road from the Roman Catholic shrine of Carfin Grotto, which is the Scottish version of Lourdes,” explains Kane. “This season our woman travels, going back to go forwards, collecting and modifying what she wears. There’s an element of the supernatural and the ancient — the sophisticated and t...

Fashion Rules For 2017

Fashion rules for a new year Let 2017 be when your style undergoes a metamorphosis Everybody is talking about resolutions — mostly about how they’ve not managed to stick to them, despite it being barely a week into the new year. Hah! People and their unrealistic resolves. I have three simple rules. Rule number 1: My resolutions never involve anything that requires waking up early or intense physical effort Rule 2: No cutting out anything I like Rule 3: Working around things I love or enjoy. And, that’s why I chose to focus on fashion resolutions. Try a new colour : When you slide open my wardrobe, you could well mistake it for a vampire’s closet. It’s full of all things black. Okay, the LBDs are justified, but I agree those four dozen black tops and skirts and half-a-dozen tunics and jackets weren’t the best idea. Especially when there are so many beautiful colours out there — sometimes, I don’t even know what one of those new shades is called. Look beyond the black...

Beauty 2017

Image
Beauty trends for 2017 Makeup artiste Marvie Beck lists out her predictions for the new year. Satin Finish : With the rise of Instagram and Snapchat filters making everyone look flawless, the satin-finish look is the cleanest one to sport this year. It’s all about the smoothness of skin in a natural and glossy way. This look is different from the usual nudes. It’s brighter with burnt peaches, deeper browns and ash pinks in the colour palette, to complement and heighten your natural skin tone. The texture of this look is the perfect balance between shiny and matte, making it great for any occasion. Everybody loves it. Who has worn it: Deepika Padukone The 60s : The 60s look is an absolute classic and can never go out of fashion. We have changed it a bit here, tweaked it a bit there, added some glitter and what-have-you, but we have always loved it. It has the winged eyeliner, with heavy and downturned lashes, making your eyes look mysterious. Sport it with deep red lips ...

Currency Of Fashion

The new currency of fashion From luxury fabrics to craft taking the limelight, NACHIKET BARVE predicts fashion trends for the new year that are here to stay. Coco Chanel famously said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” As we step into the new year filled with hope, excitement and some trepidation, the eternal cycle of fashion is also seeing a shake up. Domestically and internationally, designers and brands are contemplating the ‘see now-buy now’ model, social media has become the way trends surface, peak and get obsolete. What we are looking at is a new order, where trends don’t matter, but the onus and joy of consuming fashion is left to the wearer to re-imagine it their way. However, here are a few guiding beacons that will help you curate your wardrobe and shop sensibly in the coming year.  Luxe Fabrics ‘Less is more’ is indeed the new mantra. In a...
