A rainbow of beiges, icy blues, delicate peaches and corals along with shades of cotton candy proved to be a huge bridal trend at the Lakmé Fashion Week summer/resort 2019. Designers Shriya Som and Shehla Khan bent towards the powder palette. Som’s collection ‘Reverie’ was inspired by the islands where the original raffia palm tree swayed in the breeze, and referenced foliage, florals, vines, sun and sea in pastel-toned outfits. The ensembles, emphasised with angular motifs and pre-pleated textures, presented raffia in florals and fringes. The 3D embellished lehengas, panelled bolero with tasseled skirt, a jacket over a tulle corset dress and appliquéd sheer gowns from the line made ideal destination wedding wear. The scene-stealing outfit was a glittering, long-sleeved blouse and lehenga sported by Lisa Haydon.

Khan’s collection, titled ‘Diana’ from her eponymous label Shehlaa, paid homage to the late Princess Diana. The collection, characterised by pastel hues, showcased intricate embellishments and details. Her show was opened by Isabel Kaif, who sported an olive and silver lehenga. The outfits comprising kaftans, lehengas with draped tops or cowl-sleeved and tie-up cholis were generously splashed with pearls and crystals. The roster interestingly progressed from pretty pastels to fuchsia and black, lending itself to ombré and shaded textures.

With the growing number of destination weddings, it was no surprise designers presented their comfort-first choices for brides-to-be on the ramp. Jaipur-based designer Punit Balana returned to the runway with his line ‘Maya’ on the last day, which is an ode to the French novel Madam Bovary. The collection brought to fore the designer’s signature block prints, using natural organic dyes, colours and eco-friendly techniques and sculptural shapes against a colour palette comprising white, black and blues. The fluid saris paired with blazers, asymmetrical skirts with crop tops, lehengas with tie-up blouses and shararas made ideal go-tos for brides whose affinity lies with fuss-free outfits.
