Fall Winter

Image
Winter fashion: Colours of fall Fall winter fashion can be tricky with all its layering and sculptural clothing options. But most importantly, getting your hands on the perfect shade to gel with the colder months can prove to be a tough task. But fret not, as we bring to you a comprehensive guide to rock the perfect hue from the seasonal colour palette in style. The season’s colour trends are anchored by earthy tones like warm taupe and oxblood with pops of vibrant colours like spicy mustard and lilac. And blues — not the sad kind — top the list of shades most used in designers’ fall collections. Romancing the blues The Blue dynasty indubitably rocks throughout Fall, playing with all its possible shades and exploring all the avenues ranging from icy blue to cobalt and navy blues. “Blue is versatile. If Riverside is more angled at stability and confidence, Airy Blue, the fall version of Serenity, takes anyone to a Xanadu of freedom, tranquility and weightlessness,” shares de...

Winter Fall

How to take your beauty look from fall to winter My favorite beauty look to don during fall and winter is a red lip. While a deep red is probably my number one, I decided to have some fun and create a makeup look with a subtle golden eye and a playful light red lip. After applying foundation, some light contouring (do I really need to include this part? We all know how to contour, right?), and a tiny bit of blush, I broke into my new Au Naturale products to have some fun. First, I applied Lace powdered shadow all over. Then, I put a little Chai just on the bottom part of the lid. The last color I added was Tupelo. I started on the lashline and worked by way up. Finally, I added a little bit more Lace on the inner corner of each eye for an overall brightening effect. After blending it all with a soft brush, I added some eyeliner with a slight wing and mascara. For my lips, I first lined them with Spanish Rose lip liner. When I wear colored lipstick–especially bold colors–I...

Clothing Line

Image
Fashion aficionados launch sustainable clothing line After their tryst with working in a clothing line years ago, two young fashion enthusiasts — Thasneem Masood and Adveta Dwivedi — decided to set up their own brand where they produce sustainable wear for women with a commitment to reducing textile waste. “The fashion industry is currently one of the most polluting industries in the world and 350,000 tonnes of used clothes go to landfills, while 95 per cent of these discarded clothes can be recycled or upcycled,” said Thasneem Masood, co founder of Rossbelle, a city-based eco-friendly clothing brand. “We are not just about creating beautiful clothes, but also enabling our customers to make empowered choices and helping create a long-term lifestyle solution for them,” she added. The duo recently held a first-of-its-kind event in the city — ‘Swap your clothes’, an initiative to promote sustainability, where people exchanged their old, wearable, clothes, acces...

Kicks Trend

Image
It's the best time of the year for new kicks—whether they're for yourself or a gift for someone else. Black Friday isn't just a day for great savings—is also a day many sneaker brands have pinpointed as the perfect opportunity for people to stock up on the most hyped-up sneaker releases of the year. Whether they're buying new kicks as gifts or for selfish reasons, Black Friday sneakers have become notorious for inciting mayhem at stores.  (Most memorably, people went straight-up berserk trying to score the Air Jordan 11 Concords back in 2011, prompting many brands to adopt newer, safer methods of release.) However in 2016, with more releases throughout the year in general, it's unlikely things will get too out of hand for any specific Black Friday sneaker releases. Still, none of these five releases worth picking up on Friday will be easy to get. Here's what you need to know about each. Kendrick Lamar x Reebok Classic Gr...

Heritage Line

Escada Grabs Inspo from '60s Paintings & Its Brand Heritage for Latest Resort Line Escada folds four decades of heritage into a modern resort collection that shimmers in shades of water, sun, and sand. While many fashion houses come and go or change direction with each new in-house designer, Escada is approaching the grand age of forty without losing sight of what makes it special in the eyes of its faithful followers, while simultaneously offering “classic cool” to seduce younger fans. “In fashion, reaching 40 years is a great accomplishment,” says Escada’s fashion director, Daniel Wingate, of the label’s upcoming milestone. “It’s an honor that so many women still love the brand and turn to Escada to make them feel beautiful.” With that in mind, Escada has created a bright, vivacious resort collection laced with modern elements, but which, Wingate adds, translates the brand’s heritage for today. Wingate turned to David Hockney’s celebrate...

Curl Up Style

Fashionable reads: Curl up in style with these chic new books Does your reading list need a makeover? Spruce it up with some of the latest books to crack open the magic and mystery of fashion through vibrant photographs and insider stories.  It’s been six years since the untimely death of British designer Alexander McQueen, and there’s still so much the fashion world doesn’t know about the breadth and depth of his talents. His longtime photographer Robert Fairer, Vogue’s Sally Singer and McQueen expert Claire Wilcox fill in some of those gaps in “Alexander McQueen: Unseen” (Yale University Press, $65). Never-before-seen photos of his designs on and off the catwalk along with essays about him offer a rare glimpse into his artistry and aura. It sometimes seems there’s nothing Tommy Hilfiger can’t do. He’s transformed football fields into fashion show, thrown a carnival to launch a new collection and built a brand ...

Home Grown Losing Out

Image
‘Made in America’ Versus Fast Fashion Home grown companies are still losing out Earlier this month, online retailer Nasty Gal shocked fans by filing for bankruptcy. The e-commerce darling, which sold original designs, vintage pieces and items from other brands, became a social media hit thanks to innovative branding.  Fellow millennial favorite American Apparel’s demise was not quite so surprising, having long been simmering in the pot despite the brand’s popularity. While both companies cited a number of reasons including legal troubles and mismanagement for their financial crashes, a major, troubling factor was also key—they kept most of their manufacturing within the United States.                       The higher wages and management costs of the “Made in USA” label, although ethical, come at a very expensive price. Midrange brands trying to maintain that status have met with obstacles that fast-fashion co...

Fashion forward One of Europe’s most interesting technology companies sells shoes and threads PAST the rolling hills, grazing ponies and sleepy villages of North Rhine-Westphalia, in west Germany, a convoy of trucks converges on Mönchengladbach. Here a hangar the size of 13 football fields encloses the logistics centre of Zalando, Europe’s biggest online vendor of clothing and footwear. Inside, people pack boxes with shoes, jeans and handbags; and thousands of parcels progress at fairground speed up and down a 14km conveyor belt where they are weighed, labelled, scanned and sorted before tumbling down slides into trucks bound for 15 countries. Last year Zalando shipped 55m orders, over 100 per minute, from three such warehouses. The firm’s founders, David Schneider and Robert Gentz, started by selling flip-flops online from their Berlin flat in 2008. They found that Europe’s market for shoes and clothing was fragmented, inefficient and offline. Soon, they were backed b...

Floorsweeper

Image
Fashion's floorsweeper: the latest trend where practicality has no place For the likes of Kylie Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Rihanna, longer is better. But as lengthy garments go from catwalk to high street, can grubby hems be avoided? Fashion loves a trend that has not got much truck with the everyday. Enter the floorsweeper: pretty much unwearable on a rainy day, on public transport or a country walk. The floorsweeper is exactly what it describes: trousers, coats or dresses that sweep over the floor. See? Not exactly something that translates to the average norm’s commute, is it? This trend comes from the kind of women who live in the constant glow on the Instagram post, moving from hotel to car, with a driver just out of shot: the likes of Gigi Hadid, Kylie Jenner and Rihanna. It adds an element of drama even if matched with the hoodies and trainers that make up these women’s wardrobes. Hadid is a fan of a long coat that trails along the street in cream (warni...

Timba

‘Timba’ couture THERE was literally standing- room only at The Normandie Hotel and Conference Centre, St Ann’s, on Tuesday evening, as popular men’s wear designer, Ecliff Elie revealed his 2016 collection of resort wear entitled “Timba”. Inspired by the Cuban sound of music, which blends African beats with Spanish-flavoured rhythms and melodies, “Timba” featured an assortment of colourful outfits designed to make the wearers “stand out in a crowd”.  A huge crowd of male and female fashion-lovers assembled to bear witness to the new collection, but had to be prompted by MC Ken Simmons to share their feelings on the various designs as they were revealed. “Do y’all see those pants?” He asked rhetorically. “Years ago, the length of those pants would mean that something was wrong… And those shoes? You will notice – they are to be worn without socks!” Instructions and advice on the latest fashion trends continued to be shared throughout the night, as a number of celebrities b...

Budget Fashion

9 Tips For Looking Fashionable On a Budget 1. What type of fashion do you REALLY want? If you had a $100 a month to spend on clothes, are you the person who would want 10 ten dollar tops from Target or would you want one lovely sweater from Neiman Marcus? Either way works, but I find that most people really want the nice top that is more expensive, but instead buy the inexpensive clothes because they see them while shopping and throw them into the cart. Or if you are like me, you find something you really love but don’t buy it because it is too pricey and then end up buying more things that you like less. In my perfect scenario, I’d resist the impulse cheap buys and make a plan to buy the nicer things when I’m out. Think on it a minute and decide if all was a perfect world, how would I dress? 2. Review what you have People tend to accumulate and accumulate and hold on to things that are never or rarely used. Take some time and face your closet. First, see the b...
