Makeup compared to 2006 & 2016

The Kim Kardashian effect? Women today have 27 STEPS to their makeup routine - compared to just eight a decade ago..

While some still hanker for the natural look, it has been revealed that today’s woman has a staggering 27 steps to their daily makeup routine, compared to just eight a decade ago.
Beauty experts compared the best-selling makeup and beauty accessories in 2006 to today’s must haves - with shocking results.
While the 2006 beauty icon was Sienna Miller, who spearheaded the boho natural look, today’s best-sellers are based around the steps required to achieve Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner's selfie-ready look.

Today’s woman uses 27 different cosmetics and beauty tools to achieve a full face, taking an average of 40 minutes to complete. This is in comparison to just eight products in 2006, which took 17 minutes to complete.
It seems that social media has given rise to a new beauty customer, which is being dubbed the 'Professional-Amateur Makeup Artist', who see their application of cosmetics as a serious business.

This customer will have an average of twenty beauty tools for their daily routine, with additional specialist tools for specific looks.
Contouring still remains one of the most searched for beauty trends on Youtube with 1,150,000 videos showing how to contour. Customers are snapping up specific makeup brushes for every step of their beauty routine - a far cry from the 1980s when a sponge eyeshadow applicator and fingers sufficed.

Not only are customers buying additional products to add to their makeup regime but they are buying long-lasting heavier duty makeup, too, with sales of long-wear foundation and mascara booming.
Speaking about the new findings, a spokesperson for Superdrug, who commissioned the research, said: 'It’s vital for today’s young beauty lover that they are selfie ready at any time of the day or night. They are taking professional makeup artist routines and recreating them for their daily lives.
'While defined brows, contoured cheekbones, long-lasting lipstick and artfully applied eye makeup look amazing, it’s interesting that for us they have spawned a whole new category of products such as fixing sprays and new heavy duty makeup remover.'

Discussing the results of the survey, facialist and skincare expert, Lisa Franklin, said: 'Since 2006, the beauty industry has become extremely saturated with big name brands continuously introducing new products and greatly expanding their product base.
'There are a high number of goods on the market that only tackle one specific aspect of a person’s make-up routine so, naturally, more products are needed to complete a whole look.
'In addition to this, celebrity culture and the concentration of glossy A-listers and beauty bloggers on our news feed magnifies the presence of make-up trends and, in-turn, portrays the "perfect face", which in "real life" – without a make-up artist at hand – are impossible to achieve with minimal time or products.
