Fashion Explores Transformative Pieces

MoMA fashion exhibit explores transformative pieces New York's Museum of Modern Art is asking a thought-provoking question about fashion: Is fashion actually modern? "CBS This Morning" toured a new exhibit where a century of fashionable clothing and accessories are celebrated for their contribution to art and design. You might be surprised to learn how many of these articles of clothing are part of your wardrobe. Paola Antonelli has spent more than a decade collecting and curating 111 items for the first fashion exhibit at MoMA in over 70 years. "One hundred eleven items. Why that number?" CBS News correspondent Vladimir Duthiers reports. "Just, it can be divided by three and therefore it brings good luck," Antonelli said. The exhibit begins with Coco Chanel's little black dress and variety of interpretations that followed. "The little black dress from that viewpoint has been in continuous evolution. Now it's funny we could wear that ...

In Fashion , Looking Back

Image
In Fashion, the Beauty (and Challenge) of Looking Back   THE ARCHIVES OF BALENCIAGA, the 100-year-old fashion house, are held in a raw concrete warehouse space in Paris. There are 6,000 items in total — sculptural silk ball gowns and cocoon-shaped coats and a tobacco-brown chenille-embroidered lace coat once owned by Wallis, Duchess of Windsor — all shrouded in calico garment bags. Especially delicate pieces are wrapped in acid-free tissue paper to protect against dust and moths and are laid to rest in cardboard boxes referred to in the business as ‘‘coffins.’’ Balenciaga’s haute couture maison, formerly located on the Avenue George V, was a chapel dedicated to the worship of fashion as art; here, in its cavernous catalog of designs past, the atmosphere is of a crypt — or even a shrine. When I visited the archive in the spring of 2017, the debut fall 2016 collection of Balenciaga’s latest artistic director, Demna Gvasalia, had just arrived. The conservation team, led by arch...

Fashion's Edge

Image
Chasing Fashion’s Cutting Edge Dustin Pittman’s gaze roamed the bustling back office of Century 21 on Cortlandt Street, where Kim Shui was prepping her fashion show. In an instant, he found his mark. She was China Lee, who would be modeling one of the giddily mismatched plaids and brocades Ms. Shui planned to unveil a couple of floors below. Moments later, Mr. Pittman was hustling Ms. Lee into a nearby restroom, propping her against a suitably uncluttered wall and, camera raised, sweet-talking her into a series of poses, some coy, others as steamy as a night in Belize. “I want a little bit more you, not model-y,” he said. “Kind of play with the dreads. Look at me, intense — that’s nice, fire in the eyes, that’s it, that’s it.” Ms. Lee complied, tossing her braids this way and that. In a scant five minutes, Mr. Pittman had what he’d come for. “She lost the veneer,” he said. “Now you can see who she is.” If he’s brash, even a little over the top, well, that’s a privilege he has earn...

Role In Show Tops

Fashion: Role in show tops of milliner's success  "My hat's lead a more exciting life than I do!" laughed milliner Monika Neuhauser as her creations flew business class to Dubai then first class to London before appearing at Ascot. Ascot may seem a long way from the small Waikato town where Monika has been making headwear since 2006. "We've lived in the middle of Pirongia for 23 years, on an acre where I have a separate studio. Clients happily drive a couple of hours to see me and photos can be sent electronically for approval. E-commerce makes buying from overseas easy," says Monika. Her designs have been dispatched to Australia, Canada, the United States, UK and Ireland. Creating hats for Tarnished Frocks and Divas 2017 show Zoetica, her first foray into theatre, is a fresh challenge. "We work with larger dimensions in theatre." Monika attributes some of her international exposure to being very active o...

Return of the 'traditional' bra scores an upgrade for Victoria's Secret's parent company Shares of L Brands, which owns retail chains Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works, rose Friday after a firm upgraded the stock on the idea that millennials will buy more "traditional bras" in 2017. FBR Capital Markets' research group, FBR & Co., upgraded L Brands to outperform from market perform, citing the fact that the company's intimate apparel segment remains a "top pick" among core consumers. The stock closed the day up nearly 3 percent, trading around $51 per share. "Our survey results ... show that consumers did not significantly switch out of [Victoria's Secret/PINK] intimate apparel in 2016," analyst Susan Anderson wrote in a Friday note to clients. The firm upped its price target for L Brands to $60 from $54. FBR also increased its 2017 earnings estimates to $3.31 from $3.16 per share, while raising its 2018 E...

Shape Of Things

Image
Shape of things to come at fashion show 'Architectural' has been the buzzword in fashion circles of late. Terms such as 'pared back' and 'sculptural' reflect the aesthetic, and yesterday we witnessed a masterclass in architectural fashion when new pieces from Spanish label Delpozo closed the Brown Thomas (BT) Autumn Winter 2017 (AW17) show. Delpozo's creative director Josep Font acknowledged that his time studying architecture - to please his parents - inspired his eccentric shapes. There was certainly a gasp of surprise, and delight, as the gathered audience surveyed his drop-shouldered, wrap-sleeve, orange trapeze coat, worn with a futuristic headpiece with textural beading on the side. Bird-like, it was stunning - though not, perhaps, for everyone. For less experimental dressers, there was a retinue of seriously glamorous, ultra-feminine dresses. A pink Erdem satin gown with beaded straps and flounced, hi-low hemline stole many hearts because not...

New Embroidery

Image
Current, copper used to develop new embroidery at DMU Cutting-edge research into using electric currents and copper to develop a new form of embroidery has earned a senior lecturer at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) a prestigious award. Jo Horton, who joined DMU in 2006, has been highly commended in the Embroiderers’ Guild Beryl Dean Award for Teaching Excellence in Embroidery and Design for 2017. The award recognises academics who tirelessly enhance the learning experience and who care passionately about the future of embroidery. Judges were particularly impressed by Jo’s leading research which she shares with her students to encourage ambition and innovative thinking. Referring to her work as ‘metal horticulture’, Jo, who leads the Mixed Media Textiles pathway on DMU’s Textile Design BA (Hons), said: “My research at DMU has focused on the ways in which fashion textiles has been transformed by metallic embellishment, looking at the role traditional craft techniques have...

Look Out For fashion

Image
Look out for African fashion   EARLIER this week my comments about the recent Jamaica Observer report on Caribbean FashionWeek showcase were questioned, with civility and good manners — a rare commodity these days. The response came from one who spoke with respect, even as I gave my views. The person who was involved in the presentation communicated with me with a mild and gentle e-mail, questioning how and why? It is not often somebody disagrees with you and does so in a calm and civilised way. Therefore, I extend thanks and best wishes to the particular gentleman who knew what the word “civilised” means. We had a difference of opinion, as I declared that I was not impressed by the show — a conclusion I arrived at all by myself. Message learned: Respeck...even when somebody is bound to ask why you “fass inna people business”. Some expletives could have been included in the correspondence, but they weren't. There are many other people who would have gladly turned our diffe...

Neutrals and blacks and joggers, very Céline. Exhibition Road The V&A’s extension is open. Time to marvel at the ceramic tiled courtyard. ‘Mangas’ Spanish for ‘sleeves’. Apparently heard shouted by sleeve-obsessive Cristóbal Balenciaga. Going down Polly Pocket bags We’re all for 90s nostalgia, but this is one throwback best left in the past. Millennial pink We’re calling it – it’s gone mass, and primary colours are the future. Lie-in...

Fashion Graduates

Image
The Future of Graduate Fashion Week      Graduate Fashion Week already connects thousands of students with industry recruiters, but is only just beginning to recognise its digital and global potential. LONDON, United Kingdom — Over the last four days, 1,500 graduate collections have been presented at Graduate Fashion Week in London. Bringing together 68 fashion schools from across the globe, the annual event is essentially an unusually exuberant recruitment fair. The venue, a multi-level warehouse space, has been transformed by graduate collections, filling every inch of three showrooms. Graduates stand eagerly by their portfolios, patiently hoping to catch the eye of industry insiders, press and the general public as they wind their way through the spaces. Founded in 1991, from the outset, Graduate Fashion Week’s (GFW) goal has been clear: “We got all the students from various universities around the UK, we got potential employers that came from Europe and Ameri...

Latest Makeup

The Latest Beauty Trend Is Not Buying More Makeup With tens of thousands of new offerings from beauty brands yearly, makeup lovers are saying “no thanks.” If you’ve browsed through the “Just Arrived” section of Sephora lately, you’d be forgiven for being overwhelmed. As of press time, there are 84 items in that section alone. In total, the store stocks 17,000 products, and it expects companies that sell in the store to have new offerings every three months in order to keep their spot. Ulta, one of Sephora’s main competitors, stocks “over 20,000 products” from “over 500 brands.”   And stores like Sephora and Ulta are just one part of the vast makeup industry — there are also indie brands, drugstore aisles, and prestige offerings like Chanel that don’t stock at Sephora or Ulta. Picking up a novel blush or foundation can be fun, but feeling lost in a deluge of new releases, without much of a guide about what’s worth your attention and what’s not, can be daunting. You can find you...

Fashion Summer

Image
FASHION: Make a summer style statement with knots and bows   This season, getting tied in knots is no bad thing, at least on the fashion front. Katie Wright runs down the best twisted, tied and knotted pieces in the shops . THE spring/summer catwalks gave us some seriously flashy trends - hot pink and Flamenco ruffles, anyone? But there's been a much subtler look that has, slowly but surely, crept onto the high street. And now it's EVERYWHERE. There's not a shirt, skirt or shoe variety that hasn't been given the knot treatment, with twisty draping and cute bow-ties adding interest to dresses and camisoles we can't wait to take on holiday. That's the thing about this trend, it's so far-reaching that you'd be hard-pushed not to find something you love that ticks the tied-up box, whether you're a boho babe or athleisure devotee. From casual tops to going-out gear and the must-have pool sliders of the summer, these are the ten tied pieces we...
